The light around the man grew more intense. The brightness hurt Osbern’s eyes, as if they were being pricked from behind.
“Of course! I am the shepherd.”
What would the shepherd be without the wolf?
The light flared, consuming Osbern completely. He cried out. He dropped his sword and it rang against the earth with a sound that pierced the ears. His horse tossed beneath him, and then he flew through the air, as if into the great light.
And all the while the man approached him with the cart, turning it sideways. Obsern saw its wheels, one in front of the other, turning, turning …
Then he struck the earth.
